Cozumel is famous for the various cruiseships that visit Cozumel. Cozumel is an island in the caribbean sea, off the Eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. It is roughly 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, and situated some 6 miles from the mainland.
A big part of the Island is jungle, and very hard to enter. Unlike most other parts in Mexico, Cozumel is just flat,the highest point is about 50 feet above sea level.
Because of the healthy coral reef marine communities and the crystal clear waters, scuba diving is one of Cozumel’s major attractions. The reefs are protected from the open ocean by the island’s natural geography.
In 2005 Cozumel was struck by 2 hurricanes, hurricane Wilma caused the most damage when it hit the Island in October.
The main industries in Cozumel are tourism, diving and charter fishing. You will find over 300 restaurants on the island, many of them serve the freshest seafood. Some of the activities on Cozumel are para-sailing, kitesurfing, and a tourist submarine, 2 dolphinariums, and of course there are many stores wich sell all kinds of souvenirs.
What to do in Cozumel? Downtown Cozumel has several discothèques, bars, cinemas, stages and restaurants. At sunday evenings locals and toursits share a dance on the main plaza.
Cárdenas was one of a group that fled to the island from the village of Saban, on the mainland, after an attack during the War of the Castes. Many villagers were killed, but Cárdenas survived whilst clutching a small wooden cross. Legend has it that Cárdenas vowed to start an annual festival wherever he settled, to honor the religious power of this crucifix.
