Ixtapa general info
Ixtapa is a beach resort situated in the municipality of Zihuatanejo de Azueta, which is located in the Guerrero state, Mexico. This beach resort is located 5 km northwest of Zihuatanejo and approximately 245 km northwest of Acapulco. The creation of Ixtapa began in the early 1970’s as a tourist resort, planned by the government. Ixtapa was constructed on a site which once was a coconut plantation and a mangrove estuary. The transportation in Ixtapa includes air transport, bus and highway. There is also an airport in Ixtapa.
Ixtapa is home for over 6000 hotel rooms. There are plenty of large hotel corporations existing in Ixtapa and you can choose from a variety of all-inclusive resort packages. Besides these all-inclusive resorts, you can also find luxury boutique hotels and small hotels or inns between 1 and 4 stars.
There is a variety of shops and markets in Ixtapa where you can buy nearly everything, from clothing to jewelry and crafts. The nightlife in Ixtapa is limited, consisting of a few resort bars and clubs, where you can spend a wonderful night.
The main activities to be enjoyed in Ixtapa include the following:
- Diving, Snorkeling and Fishing. There are more than 30 dive sites in the area and the visibility is usually excellent in all of them. You can dive in areas like deep canyons or shallow reefs. You may also opt for snorkeling, for which professionals will guide you to suitable locations. Fishing is a popular choice as well. You can easily rent a boat to have an amazing fishing experience.
- Golf. There is a golf course in Ixtapa called the Campo de Golf Ixtapa, also known as Palma Real Golf Club. This club has 18-hole, par-72 championship course situated on a coconut plantation adjacent to the beach. You can admire the area’s wildlife while playing golf.
- Water Park. Called the Delfiniti Ixtapa, this water park is home of dolphins who live in a huge pool and interact with the visitors. There are special sessions organized for children and adults and during such a session, you have the chance to receive kisses and hugs from dolphins, as well as take short rides. You are recommended to make a reservation.
The main attractions of Ixtapa are, of course, the beaches. The main beach is called Playa Palmar and it is a wonderful white-sand arc with impressive rock formations rising from the sea. Another popular beach in the area is Playa Linda, situated about 13 km north of Ixtapa. This beach is mainly popular for its watersports and horseback riding, which you can do by renting the proper equipment. Other beaches of Ixtapa are Playa las Cuatas, Playa Majahua and Playa Vista Hermosa.
