Mazatlan was originally founded on an Easter Sunday in 1531 by a group of 25 Spaniards under the command of Nuño de Guzman. But it was not until the 1820′s that a permanent colony took root. After years of virtual anarchy, a municipal government was finally established in Mazatlan by a group of German settlers who developed the port facilities in order to facilitate the import of agricultural equipment.

The Sierra Madre range retreats out of sight along this section of the coast, depriving the town of the scenic backdrop of mountains that frame other vacation resorts along the “Mexican Riviera”. The original lures were hunting and sport fishing. But other natural attributes, such as year-round warm weather and noteworthy Mazatlan sunsets and great beaches attracted sun worshippers and beachcombers beginning in the 1930s.
